You can purchase a Japan Rail (JR) pass before you leave Australia. Ours was a 7-day pass but there are other options. You need to activate the pass before you use it by visiting the ticket offices at one of the railway stations.
Although the typical traveller uses automated turnstiles (just like in Sydney), if you are using a JR pass you need to show it to an official at a separate turnstile.
For most JR trains, you can reserve seats.
You need to take your baggage onto the carriage and find somewhere to place it. Sometimes there is a small area at the end of the carriage for bags but not always.
The bullet trains do travel fast. They operate between major cities such as Tokyo to Kyoto.
JR also operates suburban trains. All the JR trains I saw were above ground whereas other companies run underground trains in metro areas.
