In Kyoto, we caught local buses several times. This was like catching a suburban bus in Sydney. However, you enter the bus by the rear door and you pay as you leave by the front door next to the driver.
There is a machine near the driver for tickets or cash. We bought a day pass for bus travel at the ticket office near Kyoto station. In most cases, you can also pay the fare on the bus using coins or sometimes with notes.
